Rangel Wrangling

March 2, 2010

Some news outlets are reporting that the ever corrupt Charlie Rangel (D-NY) will be stepping down as chairman of the Ways and Means committee.

Just breaking on Twitter, Chuck Todd of MSNBC claims:

NBC News has learned Charlie Rangel will voluntarily give up his Ways and Means chairmanship, possibly as early as tonight.

MI Dem Rep. Sander Levin will temporarily take over the Ways and Means cmte; Unclear if Rangel can get the gavel back.

Tune in tomorrow to see if those reports pan out.

Earlier today on NRO’s Corner, Daniel Foster quoted a senior Democratic aide who said, “The dam broke today,” increasing the bipartisan pressure for Rangel to step down.

Bipartisan pressure means that the Democrats are growing increasingly nervous about their collective (ironic) chances in November.

The Hill, however, is reporting that Rangel is refusing to step down, which does seem more in line with his delusional character.

Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) will not step down from his position, the congressman said Tuesday.

Rangel, who sits atop one of the most powerful committees in the House, rejected calls to step down from his chairmanship pending the result of an ethics inquiry.

Rangel, following a meeting with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on the Capitol, denied very preliminary reports Tuesday evening that he’d be stepping down.

When asked whether he is still chairman, Rangel said: “you bet your life!”

He then said Pelosi told him not to say “a damn thing” about the meeting.

We’ll see how this plays out. I’m not placing any bets — while the Democrats are eager to save themselves, it is awfully rare for a Democrat to actually admit wrong-doing and to pay any price for it.

This has become a golden opportunity to save some “grace” for Nancy Pelosi’s claim of the most ethical Congress EVAH. As many as 39 Democrats have made it known they don’t believe Rangel should keep his chairmanship because of past actions of an almost exact same nature. That was the “dam breaking” for Rangel, who needed the Black Caucus to remain solidly in his corner. They didn’t and he’s toast, as far as Ways and Means Committee chairmanship is concerned.

Now we stand by, awaiting the results of at least two more active investigations of wrong doing on Rangel’s part. If the results are as bad – or worse – he could be punished more severely….But don’t bet the rent money on it.

This clown should be in an orange jump suit for any number of crimes, but as things are he will retire a millionaire in the Caymans. He played the American people like a pimp plays a ho. And surprise of surprises, he came out smelling like a rose and richer toboot. Only in America.
