Failure to uphold and defend the constitution? I think that’s an impeachable offense. It wouldn’t” just” be about sex this time. The Obamamessiah is a legend in his own mind– and an empty suit everywhere else.
Elections have consequences. So, How is that “hope and change” working out you?
Lori,
Wasn’t George Bush “constitutionally mandated” to do the same job?
He had eight years in office to get it done. Obama is pushing two years in office, and in 2009, his administration performed much better than Bush’s last year in office on Southwest border security.
Here’s the numbers:
Since March 2009, CBP and ICE have seized $85.7 million in illicit cash along the Southwest border, an increase of 14 percent over the same period during the previous year. This includes more than $29.7 million in illicit cash seized heading southbound into Mexico – a 39 percent increase over the same period during the previous year.
During the same period, CPB and ICE together seized 1,425 illegal firearms, which represent a 29 percent rise over the same period in the previous year. At the same time, CBP and ICE seized 1.65 million kilograms of drugs along the Southwest border, an overall increase of 15 percent.
Additionally, the San Diego DHS Maritime Unified Command – comprised of U.S. Coast Guard, CBP, ICE and other law enforcement partners – saw a more than six-fold increase in maritime drug interdictions in the Pacific waters extending from the Southwest border. The Command seized more than 26,000 kilograms of drugs in fiscal year 2009, compared to 4,029 kilograms seized in fiscal year 2008.
And contrary to popular conservative belief, the rate of violent crime at the border, and indeed across Arizona, has been declining, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as has illegal immigration, according to the Border Patrol.
Lori says this about Jan Brewer:
“Once floundering, she is now enjoying a 55% approval rating and is likely to be re-elected. This is partially based on the fact that she, like many conservative women in the forefront these days, actually has a spine and is willing to speak out and tell it like it is. It is also partially based on President Obama’s own woeful incompetence, as epitomized in Jan Brewer’s new ad”
Her good numbers may also be “partially based on the fact” that she stopped promoting a sales tax increase, and realized that she could politicize border security to win re-election.
Well, yes, because everything is the same. Drug violence and other drug cartel activity in the border towns of Mexico are now, at the exact same levels as they were in… say… 2006, as an example. Of course, I can’t source that, but I’m sure that you can given an increase in activity that leads to an increase in interdiction wouldn’t exactly support your argument that Obama is better at containing illegal immigration than Bush.
Same for the economic conditions. The unemployment rate is as low as it was in… say… 2005 when jobs were plentiful and illegals were filling the ever-expanding home construction jobs. Again, I can’t source this, but as with the previous example, I’m sure you can.
There’s no question that Bush, Clinton, Bush the elder, Reagan, Carter, Ford… have not done a good job at securing the border. And since Congress pulls the purse strings, I think it’s more appropriate to place the blame there. And both sides have held sway over Congress during the last three decades. But to imply that Obama is doing a better job at border control is ludicrous. He has even less incentive than anyone since Clinton to secure the border given his lack of seriousness in combating domestic terror, and his assumption that the Latin vote is solidly Democrat.
Oh, and politicization as another platform of your argument? Seriously? I’d advise you to consider Eric Holder and the DoJ before claiming the only one side is playing politics.
Apples to apples, Molten. If you want to make a coherent argument, leave the straw men out. Otherwise, you come across… well… melted.
BKeyser says:
“Drug violence and other drug cartel activity in the border towns of Mexico are now, at the exact same levels as they were in… say… 2006”
Actually, they were higher in 2006 than they are now. If you’d like to read what law inforcement officers in Arizona border towns have been saying lately, here’s a good article from Arizona..
http://azcapitoltimes.com/blog/2010/05/10/border-towns-say-violent-crime-rates-are-low/
My argument was that there is, in fact, an army of people working everyday to keep our border secure. More manpower is dedicated to border security right now that at any other time in our history. Source that.
If you think that we could ever secure our border completely, you are delusional.
BKeyser says:
“And since Congress pulls the purse strings, I think it’s more appropriate to place the blame there.”
I agree. I hope Congress approves the additional $500 million that DHS is trying to get for southwest border security right now. No one should be blaming the President if that money is not allocated and used to help poor defenseless Arizona.

I’m glad that you used the “apples to Apples” analogy, BKeyser, because I never claimed that “only one side is playing politics,” I simply claimed that Jan Brewer was.
I completely agree that there is politicization of the border on the left as well as the right. So, we both agree that it is “apples to apples,” when you compare Jan Brewer to Eric Holder. They are both politicizing the border for political gain. Without a doubt.
Enforcement, not inforcement, my mistake.
Actually, in reference to border-town violence, I said the “border towns of Mexico.” I was specifically referring to violence in Mexico along the US border. The recent murder of a Mayoral (I think) candidate emphasizes my point – though I believe that town bordered Texas, if memory serves.
And I while more manpower may be focused on border security today than at any other point in history -that in itself does not make the effort strong enough. Manpower can be misplaced, and rules of engagement can limit interdiction.
The larger issue here is that Obama is a closet Open-Borders advocate. Whether that is simply political pandering or a deep-held believe, I cannot answer. But his speech today on the subject – behind the political jargon meant to impress the uninformed and politically naive- clearly indicated that he is not willing to “secure” the border and prevent illegal access. He went so far as to say “Being an American is not a matter of blood or birth, it’s a matter of faith…” That is not a serious statement from someone trying to stop the flood of illegal immigrants.
I do appreciate your cordial reply (above).
Violence inside of Mexico is one thing, but if you read my article from Arizona, you know that those who manage to cross the border don’t hang around American border towns to commit violent crime. And calling Obama an “open-border advocate” is pure speculation on your part. Unless you’re 100% American Indian, you have immigrant blood regardless of whether or not you were born here. Obama was simply saying that we’re all immigrants, it’s love of country that defines a true American.
Figures don`t lie but liars do” figure”. I would not be too quick to accept Gov. stats from an administration with an agenda like B.O.`s. He has no concern for our borders and unfortunately neither did Bush.
Really? You think that Obama can force the FBI, DHS, Border Patrol, and other agencies to skew their statistical information to reflect an alternate reality that benefits him politically? Wow. I think that maybe a career conservative in one of those agencies might have blown the whistle on that one by now. That’s a hell of a scandal you’re dreaming up there, johnnywood. Let me know when Fox News breaks this story nationally.
“..his administration performed much better than Bush’s last year in office on Southwest border security.”
So, for one year compared to another year, certain interdiction numbers were up. So what?
1) If you want to compare apples to apples, you’re going to have to compare Obama’s term (all 4 years of it, max) to Bush’s full term and average them. Or, since that will take some time to fall out, compare 2009 to the average of the Bush years. That may come out favorable to either one; I don’t know – but neither do you, according to your own statement.
I also notice that your quotes do not address the substance of the post, which is illegal immigration. They address something which may or may not be relevant, which is interdiction of contraband.
I’ve noticed that liberals have an enhanced ability to ignore the facts presented by conservatives, and argue something entirely different without acknowledging, or even noticing, the difference. Your comment is an excellent example.
I know it’s hard for liberals to actually THINK, but please try.
Alanstorm says:
“I also notice that your quotes do not address the substance of the post, which is illegal immigration. They address something which may or may not be relevant, which is interdiction of contraband.”
I DID actually address the fact that illegal immigration is down across the board. You must have skipped that part of my post. And if you think that interdiction is irrelevent to what Jan Brewer is whining about, then you’re the one who is “arguing something entirely different without acknowledging, or even noticing, the difference.”
Here are the illegal immigration statistics that you expected me to post.
The number of apprehensions made by the Border Patrol declined for the third year in a row to 724,000 after reaching a mid-decade peak of 1,189,000 in 2005. The decrease in apprehensions between 2005 and 2008 may be due to a number of factors including declining U.S. economic growth and enhanced border enforcement efforts. Border apprehensions in 2008 were at their lowest level since 1976. Apprehensions previously peaked at 1,676,000 in 2000.
Between January 2008 and January 2009, the number of unauthorized immigrants living in the United States decreased seven
percent from 11.6 million to 10.8 million. The number of unauthorized
residents declined by 1.0 million between 2007 and 2009.
I am not a liberal by any measurement. I don`t think Bush nor B.O. care about securing the border. I know that you can prove anything by manipulating numbers (liars do figure). I`m no conspiracy theorist but I do not trust the Federal Govt. I worked for a State agency for thirty years and have seen enough to cause me to be very doubtful of “facts” based on “figures”. The only U.S. President who ever cared about illegals from Mexico was Ike who went after employers of said illegals back in the mid-fifties. When the work dried up the illegals went back home. No Pres. since then has ever tried to control this mess.
Doesn’t the AZ National Guard need some target practice?
Once again we see that when a conservative politician actually defends conservatism and their state, they become popular. The moment they stop doing that and start acting like Democrats they lose.
